More Than 13,500 People Completed the 27th Annual Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk

Finishers represented 350 Small, Mid-sized, and Large Atlanta Companies

Atlanta, Ga. – Downtown Atlanta was a hub of excitement this evening as more than 13,500 Atlanta corporate employees and their friends and families crossed the finish line at the Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk. Award winners included:

• First Overall Male - Ross Ridgewell of Niche Cubed (Cobb County); Time: 15:14
• First Overall Female - Linda Nguyn of General Electric (Cobb County); Time: 18:39
• First Masters Male - Kenn David of Newell Rubbermaid (Fulton County), Time: 17:50
• First Masters Female - Donna Sumner of Verizon Wireless (North Fulton), Time: 21:22
• Overall Male CEO with less than 30 fulltime employees - Charles Van Horn, Berman Fink Van Horn (Fulton County), Time: 19:39
• Overall Female CEO with less than 30 fulltime employees - Michelle Matthews, Matthews Consulting (Fulton County), Time: 36:00
• Overall Male CEO with 30+ fulltime employees - Phil Harrison, Perkins + Will (Fulton County), Time: 20:08
• First Running-Related Company Male - Kevin Graham, Phidippides (Fulton County), Time: 18:02
• First Running-Related Company Female - Elizabeth Losken, Phidipipides (Fulton County), Time: 19:55

Top honors also went to Verizon Wireless (North Fulton County) for the highest overall participation and MARTA (Fulton County) for the largest total number of participants from 1995-2009.

Winners of the annual design t-shirt competition were:
• Most Creative – Buck Consultants (Cobb County)
• Most Colorful – LeasePlan (Fulton County)
• Most Creative Use of Company Logo – SBC Systems (DeKalb County)
• Best Incorporation of Event Logo – Kimberly Clark (Fulton County)

“It truly was a great event,” remarked Jeff Galloway, U.S. Olympian and director of the Corporate Run/Walk. “The support of the Atlanta business community is always spectacular, but it was even more powerful this year in light of the current economic downturn that has forced a lot of American companies to make cut-backs. But with 350 local companies represented here tonight, Atlantans can rest assured that the American spirit is alive and well in Atlanta and that their employers have everyone’s best interest at heart.”

To celebrate the accomplishment of completing the Corporate Run/Walk, participants stuck around for company picnics catered by Jason’s Deli. Popularly known as the World’s Largest Office Party, the picnics provided the backdrop for the “Corporate Cup” Award ceremony honoring the following winners of Kaiser Permanente of Georgia’s annual “Most Fit Company” competition:

• More than 5,000 employees – Georgia Power (Fulton County)
• 1,000 – 4,999 employees – Verizon Wireless (North Fulton County)
• 100 – 999 employees – Cotton Sales Insurance (DeKalb County)
• 100 or less employees – Morrison Management Specialist (Fulton County)

These winners were selected based upon their answers to a corporate health and wellness assessment survey that was reviewed by the Worksite Workgroup of Georgia’s Nutrition and Physical Activity Initiative.

But it wasn’t just these four companies and category award recipients who came out winners. Every runner and walker left with the satisfaction of knowing that their participation in the event would impact the lives of Atlanta’s children through the event’s donation of a portion of the race proceeds to the Atlanta Community Food Bank and Atlanta Braves Foundation. A food drive for the Atlanta Community Food Bank was also incorporated into this year’s event with collection boxes in the Main Info/Results area.

“I cannot even begin to express how grateful the Atlanta Community Food Bank is for the Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk’s support of our mission to provide critical resources for low-income Georgians who suffer from hunger and food insecurity,” stated Bill Bolling, founder and executive director of the Atlanta Community Food Bank. “The food collected and money donated from the Corporate Run/Walk will significantly improve the quality of life of Atlanta’s neediest residents, including children, by helping to ensure their basic nutritional needs are met. As a result, we feel our organization, along with the Atlanta Braves Foundation, is the true winner of this wonderful event.”

In addition to presenting sponsor Kaiser Permanente, other sponsors for this year’s Corporate Run/Walk included DAVE-FM, 680 The Fan Sports Radio, Best Self Atlanta magazine, FitAtlanta magazine, Clear Channel Outdoor, Dasani, Powerade, BodyPlex Fitness Adventure, Phidippides, and Jason’s Deli.

350 Atlanta Companies to Field Teams for the Annual Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk in Downtown Atlanta Tonight

5K celebrates completion of the 27th Annual Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk & Fitness Program

Atlanta, Ga.Nearly 13,500 of Atlanta employees are anxiously awaiting the sound of the gun announcing the start of the 27th Annual Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk tonight at Turner Field. Regarded as one of the largest workplace organized corporate fitness events in the Southeast, the run/walk has become a local tradition in the Atlanta business community, with several companies celebrating 15+ years of participation this season. The run/walk is the culmination of the Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk and Fitness Program that kicked off July 20 with a free, eight-week “Get Active Atlanta” Training Program that provided participants access to group run/walk sessions and free gym memberships at a number of participating health clubs throughout metro Atlanta.

For MARTA, which is celebrating its12th consecutive year of participation in the Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk and Fitness Program, this commitment to leading a healthy lifestyle is a critical component of providing safe, reliable transportation for residents of and visitors to Atlanta. Considering MARTA has had the most number of total participants since 1995 and is planning to field a team of nearly 400 runners and walkers this year, it is safe to say that the company has developed a powerful culture of health and wellness in the workplace.

Preeti Bone and Dorothy Cedars, team captains for MARTA, attribute their fellow employees’ sustained interest in the program to a multitude of factors, paramount of which is the measurable weight loss and transformations to healthy lifestyles many program participants have experienced.

“What keeps us coming back year after year is the testimonials of first time participants who are at the beginning of the journey to a healthier lifestyle, as well as the camaraderie and teamwork that has blossomed between all levels of employees,” remarked Bone and Cedars. “These factors have led to our company increasing participation by 100 employees for the last three years”.

The growth of the team is also due in part to the extraordinary level of support and engagement from MARTA’s previous and current General Managers. Michael Wells, current Chairman of the MARTA Board of Directors and a long-time runner, is looking forward to lacing up his running shoes tonight for several reasons.

“I’ve been running for almost my entire life,” remarked Wells. “The Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk is not only fun and inspires a life-long commitment to fitness, but it also has significant societal benefits through its donation of a portion of the race proceeds to local children’s charities. I’m looking forward to a good run tonight.”

Setting the pace from the top is a critical component of any corporate wellness program, regardless of the company’s size. James Bowes, CEO of Peach State Integrated Technologies, believes so strongly in the positive benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle that he has implemented his own CEO Challenge to encourage his 45 employees to participate in the Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk and Fitness Program. As part of the Challenge, Bowes pays for all of his employees’ entry fees and boxed-meals from Jason’s Deli for the Corporate Run/Walk and offers a $20 gift certificate for anyone whose 5K time is faster than his/her age. At 50 years of age, Mr. Bowes offers an extra $50 gift certificate as an incentive for those older than him to beat his time.

“The Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk is a fun event that keeps us energized and excited about exercising on a daily basis,” stated Bowes. “The race is a great goal to have on the calendar and helps to keep our discipline and dedication where it needs to be. But it is not just our employees who benefit from this increased level of health and fitness – it sets an excellent example for our spouses, kids, grandchildren, and friends. And it is also good for business because as your health improves, so does your work performance.”

With 50 CEOs from small, mid-sized, and large Atlanta companies planning to participate in the Corporate Run/Walk alongside their employees tonight, the current economic situation shows no signs of slowing down the event’s momentum. Fifty new companies signed on board for this year’s Corporate Run/Walk and Fitness Program and many past participating companies are actually doing more to ensure a good turnout for tonight’s run/walk.
LeasePlan will be one of the fifty new companies lining up at the start line tonight. Like many companies in this challenging economic environment, LeasePlan and its employees are not immune to the rising costs of healthcare and the increasing concern for employee health. To address these issues, LeasePlan decided to shift its view of healthcare from a short-term view that solely manages acute care, to a long-term view that involves preventing and managing chronic diseases. In line with this vision, LeasePlan launched an employee-driven health and wellness initiative earlier this year and registered to participate in the 2009 Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk and Fitness Program.

“Although the launch of the health and wellness initiative has required a significant investment of time and resources, we feel the endeavor has been worthwhile as it is bringing us closer to our goal of having healthy, engaged and productive employees,” stated Joye McElroy, LeasePlan team captain. “The Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk and Fitness Program is a perfect avenue for helping us reach this goal and we can’t wait to cross the finish line tonight.”

More than 200 Atlanta Companies Sign up for 27th Annual
Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk and Fitness Program

Eight-Week "Get Active Atlanta" Training Program Kicked Off Monday, July 20, 2009

Atlanta, Ga. – The 27th Annual Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk and Fitness Program officially kicked off yesterday with more than 200 Atlanta companies already registered to participate. Regarded as one of the world’s largest workplace organized corporate fitness events in the Southeast, the program features a free eight-week “Get Active Atlanta” Training Program that allows registrants access to group run/walk sessions, free gym memberships to a number of participating health clubs throughout metro Atlanta, and culminates with a 5K run/walk through downtown Atlanta on September 10, 2009.

“With the downturn in the economy and medical-related expenses on the rise, there is no better time for Atlantans to take control over their health,” remarked Jeff Galloway, director of the Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk. “The Kaiser Permanente program provides participants with the group support structure they need to begin making healthier lifestyle choices that will aid in weight loss, disease prevention and management, and reduction of obesity-related medical costs.”

A report released earlier this month by The Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation that ranked Georgia 14th in adult obesity rates and 3rd in childhood obesity rates reinforces the need for programs such as the Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk and Fitness Program in Georgia. But the alarming rate of obesity is not limited to Georgia or the South, which the report named as the fattest region of the United States – it is a national epidemic. And if Americans do not start taking actions to combat this “battle of the bulge,” it is estimated that 86.3 percent of Americans will be overweight or obese by 2030 and related health care costs will grow by as much as $959.9 billion dollars (Obesity Journal). Since Americans spend roughly one-third of their waking hours per day at work, the workplace is the best place to start making a difference.

Making a difference in the lives of Atlanta corporate employees is exactly what the Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk and Fitness Program has been doing for the past 27 years. For many new team members, crossing the finish line at this 5K is a life-altering experience that instead of marking the completion of a training program, symbolizes the start of a new life based upon a commitment to healthy lifestyle choices.

“The Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk and Fitness Program gives my husband and me control over managing our own health,” stated Ann Hayes, an employee of CH2M HILL, an environmental and engineering consulting company that has participated in the Kaiser Permanente program for the past two years. “My husband had heart bypass surgery and a hip replacement, and I’m a breast cancer survivor, so we have both learned that nothing is more important than our health. Our finish time at the corporate 5K last year was the least of our concerns – we simply rejoiced in being alive and able to complete our first 5K. We cannot wait to cross the finish line again this year to celebrate how far we’ve come and reinforce our commitment to leading healthier, happier lives.”

Employees of PricewaterhouseCoopers, Cisco (formerly Scientific Atlanta), Atlanta Foot and Ankle Center, National Vision, Inc. and Oglethorpe Power Corporation (OPC) will be celebrating more than 15 years of participation in the Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk and Fitness Program this year.

“Our long-standing participation in the program has transformed the way we think about our health,” noted Bob Stein, founding captain of the National Vision, Inc. team that has participated in the Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk and Fitness Program for the past 17 years. “Our employees really appreciate the opportunity to be more active at work and find that their participation in the program has positively affected their work performance by reducing their stress levels, giving them more energy, and building better relationships with their colleagues and bosses.”
Corporate employees aren’t the only ones who reap the benefits of work-site wellness programs. According to a 2005 study in the American Journal of Health Promotion, comprehensive workplace wellness programs can save employers an estimated $6 for every $1 spent, as well as decrease health care costs, sick leave, disability costs and workers compensation expenses by 25 percent.

“The Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk and Fitness Program is a powerful, economical resource for all Atlanta companies to begin experiencing the return on investment as outlined in the American Journal of Health Promotion study” remarked Galloway. “A new CEO category for companies with less than 30 employees is being offered this year to ensure that the entire Atlanta business community has the opportunity to be involved.”

It’s not too late for companies and their employees to get involved in this year’s program. Interested companies are encouraged to visit www.kpcorporaterunwalk.com or contact Sherri Barnes at (404) 449-4041, sherri-barnes@comcast.net for more information.
